Be the first 7 inch vinyl record pressed in New Zealand since ‘87
Although this lockdown has really thrown a spanner square in the forehead of the local music industry, it has provided everyone with a bit of much needed downtime. Holiday Records doesn't want those spare hours to be squandered — we aim to get artists inspired to use this time constructively and creatively.
A 7 inch record hasn’t been pressed in New Zealand in over thirty years. Holiday Records is about to change that. Naturally, we thought this is a great opportunity to commemorate this monumental occasion with something special for the local music community in this uncertain time.
To celebrate this announcement Holiday Records (along with sponsorship partners Roundhead Studios, Munki Studios and Sunday Best) is hosting a competition to select an aspiring artist to have their music complimentary pressed as New Zealand’s first 7 inch record since 1987.
The prize includes:
Aspiring artists are asked to submit two original tracks (A-side and B-side) and a background of themselves and their submitted music.
Mike Chunn (Split Enz, Play It Strange), Charlotte Ryan (Radio New Zealand), Rodney Fisher (Goodshirt, New Zealand Music Commission) and Jonny Vahry (95bFM) have generously offered their time and indisputable experience in the music industry to judge the competition.
Holiday Records not only sees this as an opportunity for a local artist to get creative in this lockdown period, but a valuable platform to launch their music profile in the New Zealand music industry. Charlotte Ryan from Radio New Zealand will be playing some of her favourite entries every Saturday on her show, Music 101. Moreover, Holiday Records will be sharing entries throughout the competition period on all social media channels so the public can listen to the incredible music produced by isolated Kiwis across the country.
Any New Zealand based artists (solo or group) of all genres are encouraged to enter.
Entries open 9am on Wednesday 8 April 2020 and close midnight Sunday 31 May 2020 (to ensure bands have enough time to collaborate in person, the closing date may be extended if the lockdown is still in force). Winner will be announced via social media channels and to the artist directly.
